City of Las Vegas begins Hispanic heritage celebrations

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The City of Las Vegas kicked off its Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations Saturday with a ceremony honoring ‘El Grito,’ the call for Mexican Independence.

While the celebration kicks off today, it marks the beginning of a month celebrating Hispanic heritage, which many in our community call theirs. That includes City Councilwoman Olivia Diaz, who helped organize today’s event.

“It’s just a way to acknowledge that there’s still those cultural ties to our home countries and that we’re all here united,” Diaz said.

Diaz is the first Latina elected to the Las Vegas City Council and says she’s thrilled to see how the recognition of Hispanic heritage has expanded in the valley.

“It makes my heart happy to see that every year the offerings are growing from all municipalities.”

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department also attended the event, and Sheriff Kevin McMahill was happy to gather with neighbors.

“Literally hundreds of people come out here and it’s a great way for them to meet their police department and help us improve the quality of life in our community,” McMahill said.

Tomorrow, the City of North Las Vegas will hold its Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Craig Ranch Park.
