LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada Department of Education has released its latest report card, evaluating the performance of schools throughout the state.

According to the Nevada School Performance Framework report, the Clark County School District showed progress with index scores rising in 200 schools, including 80 schools that received an improved star rating.

The star rating is based on academic achievement, college readiness, and graduation rates. It goes from one to five stars, with very few schools ever reaching five-star status.

Desert Oasis High School in the south valley saw an increase from three to four stars.

“This means the world for us to have this validation from the state that we are doing the right things and moving in the right direction for our students,” Principal Ian Salzman explained. “We’re becoming the school this community deserves so it meant so much to us.”

Desert Oasis saw an increase of five percent in their math scores and nearly 10 percent in English. Absenteeism also dropped by two percent. They additionally boasted a graduation rate of 89 percent which is eight percent above the district average.

Last year, the state rated 11 percent of Nevada schools five stars. This year Legacy Traditional School, Southwest Las Vegas Elementary and Junior High have earned the coveted five-star rating from the Nevada Department of Education’s Nevada School Performance Framework.

However, there is still significant room for improvement in the district, as over 120 schools received a one-star rating, which falls short of the state’s performance standards.
