LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A new contract was recently reached between the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the owners of the Venetian.

Now, Local 226 leaders are saying every resort on the Strip recognizes the union.

Union leaders speaking at the resort say the new contract was possible thanks to the Venetian’s new ownership.

Culinary Union leaders hope this victory is felt by those standing against them, directly calling out the ownership of off-strip resorts at Thursday’s event.

“Station Casinos should be feeling pretty lonely right now because they’re the only ones left. They’re the only ones out there saying, ‘You know what? We’re not going to agree to be neutral. We’re not going to respect the worker’s right,” Ted Pappageorge, Treasurer and Secretary of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, said.

The union represents restaurant and hotel staff like room attendants, who acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su says are the people who make Las Vegas an ideal tourist destination, and deserve their recognition.

“You receive top-notch service, and the workers who do that should not be invisible, they should be able to live a secure life too. They should be able to take a vacation themselves,” Su said.

Both Su and Pappageorge are proud of the union’s latest contract, but the latter says the job is nowhere close to finished.

“In the gaming industry, we’ve got 10,000 nonunion restaurant workers with these corporate restaurants that are freestanding in the malls. We’ve got work to do and we’ve got an election to win to make sure we protect what we have,” Pappageorge said.

When speaking of the election, Pappageorge endorsed the Harris campaign, stating that he and the union believe she’ll support their workers.
