LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada System of Higher Education has secured a grant to enhance campus safety and improve emergency preparedness.

NSHE received $519,000 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security which will be used to heighten the safety of students, faculty, and visitors at colleges and research institutions.

“Through the work of the Chancellor’s ad hoc Committee on Public Safety, we are committed to building a culture of safety and preparedness across all campuses. This grant strengthens our ability to assess and respond to threats in a proactive and coordinated way,” Chancellor Patricia Charlton said.

NSHE’s Threat Prevention, Safety, and Awareness Initiative will focus on two main objectives:

    1. Raise Social Awareness : A comprehensive outreach campaign will be launched to improve understanding of threat assessment and reporting processes. Special attention will be given to underserved groups that are at greater risk for targeted violence, equipping them with vital safety resources.
    2. Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Teams : NSHE institutions will train teams dedicated to assessing, mitigating, managing, and addressing potential threats on campus before they escalate.

In addition to the threat assessment teams, the grant will fund comprehensive training for students, faculty, and staff to help them recognize and report unusual behaviors.

NSHE is also the first recipient in Nevada to receive this grant. The money was part of $18 million spread among 35 organizations .
