Early holiday shopping starts in Las Vegas with October sales

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — With the holidays approaching, October sales have begun, allowing residents of the Las Vegas valley to start their holiday shopping at some of their favorite stores.

Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days are set for this Tuesday and Wednesday, while Target’s sales are already in progress. Walmart is scheduled to kick off its sales tomorrow, and Best Buy is also joining in on the action.

Marketing professor Barbara Kahn noted that this is a critical push for retailers in the fourth quarter.

“Starts with back to school and Halloween, a lot of spending on Halloween. Then these Amazon Prime days have definitely spurred on a lot of promotional shopping,” Kahn said.

A recent CNET survey of over 2,500 holiday shoppers revealed that 41 percent plan to take advantage of Black Friday deals. About a third of respondents are starting their shopping now, participating in Amazon’s October Prime Big Deal Days and sales from other retailers like Temu and TikTok Shop. A smaller percentage indicated they would be buying secondhand items.

Due to inflation, consumers are becoming more price-sensitive. Kahn notes that while some traditions will persist, she believes that early shopping will affect other traditionally big shopping days.

“I don’t think Cyber Monday is what it used to be, but Black Friday is still something people think about. It’s historic nature, being the day after Thanksgiving when a lot of people are off. Cyber Monday however kind of doesn’t make sense anymore,” Kahn said.

Shoppers are advised to keep a list of items, monitor their holiday budget, and avoid overspending during the early deals.
