Driver accused in deadly Las Vegas hit-and-run was out of custody on prior DUI charge, his third

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man accused of driving impaired and killing a person crossing the street last weekend was out of custody on an earlier DUI charge — his third — where he violated the terms of his release but remained out of custody, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Las Vegas Metro police arrested Alfredo Jauregui, 22, on Oct. 5 on charges of DUI resulting in death, records said. On May 30, North Las Vegas police officers stopped Jauregui and charged him with driving impaired, speeding, and driving without a valid license or insurance. The DUI charge indicates Jauregui was convicted of two other DUIs before the May arrest.

In his most recent case, Jauregui is accused of killing George Brown as Brown was in the road on Marion Drive near Nellis Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue, documents said. Officers believe Jauregui collided with Brown and then drove off, leaving behind several pieces of his truck.

As part of their investigation, police spoke with an officer who was patrolling in the area around the time of the collision. The officer remembered seeing an older Ford Ranger that did not have an operating headlight. The officer noted the car’s license plate and, not knowing at the time the truck would become a suspect vehicle, was dispatched instead to the collision scene.

Officers later found the truck in a nearby apartment complex. Detectives then spoke with the truck’s registered owner, Jauregui’s family member, who said Jauregui was not home, documents said. Jauregui was in fact home, telling officers he believed he hit a shopping cart.

Jauregui remained in custody Wednesday on $250,000 bail, records said.

In May, a North Las Vegas police officer stopped Jauregui in the same truck for speeding, documents said. The officer said Jauregui appeared impaired. That, and an open can of beer in a cup holder, led to his arrest, police said.

Jauregui was not in custody nor bail set in his May DUI case because prosecutors had not filed an official charging document against him, records said. Often in DUI cases, the criminal complaint will not be filed until blood test results are confirmed. That process can take several months.

On Aug. 27, a hearing was held in Jauregui’s North Las Vegas case, but he was not present in court. Records show his alcohol-monitoring bracelet showed a violation in mid-August. A judge ordered him to appear in court on Nov. 21.

Records from Henderson Municipal Court show police arrested Jauregui on several warrants connected to that case — his first DUI. His latest arrest marks his fourth DUI-related arrest since 2021. DUIs are misdemeanors until a person receives their third arrest within seven years.

he should be in jail for vehicular homicide, driving under the influence causing bodily harm/death. there should be stricter laws on DUI's. our insurance rates keep skyrocketing because of drivers like this.
