$1.5M approved to move Howard Hughes’ Las Vegas home

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — Howard Hughes is an influential name when it comes to Las Vegas and one of his homes is located right behind the 8 News Now studios.

On Tuesday, Clark County Commissioners approved $1.5 million dollars to help move the home to the Clark County Museum in Henderson.

Geoff Schumacher said there are many myths and legends surrounding the green house in 8 News Now’s parking lot, a place he used for his book launch “Howard Hughes: The Power, Paranoia and Place Intrigue” in 2008.

“We don’t believe that Howard Hughes actually slept in the house, we don’t believe he had people over where whether that be women or others,” he said.

The history that is true is that Hughes leased the house in 1953 and would hold meetings there and later bought the home and the TV station. In 1974, the TV station expanded, and they kept the house back there. It even made it to the big screen with the classic Las Vegas mobster flick “Casino.”

Schumacher was happy to hear they approved funding for the move and said it is important to preserve Las Vegas history.

“I think the Hughes house is reflective of this mid-century style and it’s also reflective of the great history of Howard Hughes’ impact on Las Vegas,” Schumacher said. “I think it’s worth saving and it will help to tell the Las Vegas story out at the Clark County Museum.”

He said the home would likely have to be dismantled to be moved.

The $1.5 million is still not enough to fund the entire move to Henderson. The Clark County Museum, which is in charge of the relocation project, did not announce a timeline for the move and told 8 News Now they plan to continue fundraising efforts.

The move is a cost Hughes would have no problem covering during his time in Las Vegas.

Dumb Arse Las Vegans! You could build and exact replica for a fraction of that price. And who would know? And who would care?

$1.5 million of the taxpayers dollars. And He never even lived there. It was a rental. What a joke.
