SUTTONS BAY — Looking for a sensory-friendly adventure for your family? The Inland Seas Education Association in Suttons Bay could be your ticket to hands-on autism-friendly educational fun.

The organization was recently designated as a Certified Autism Center among 20 others in Traverse City by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

The IBCCES identifies organizations that have undergone specialized training and are equipped to meet the needs of autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals.

The IBCCES certified the organization as an “Autism Destination” after multiple organizations trained a majority of their staff on the needs of autistic people. The training included recognition and understanding of autism and the common sensory sensitivity concerns.

Fred Sitkins, executive director of Inland Seas, said the recognition is a testament to the organization’s commitment to providing accessible and inclusive educational experiences for all visitors.

“The Inland Seas Education Association firmly believes that all individuals should have the opportunity to experience the majesty of our Great Lakes,” Sitkins said. “We are thrilled that training through IBCCES will help us provide hands-on education in alignment with the latest advancements in autism support.”

According to Sitkins, with the core value of protecting the essential function of the Great Lakes as a vital resource to the surrounding ecosystem, ISEA provides meaningful educational experiences that inspire curiosity, stewardship and a lifetime passion for the resiliency of the Great Lakes.

IBCCES is the only credentialing board offering these types of programs which include training from subject-matter experts and autistic self-advocates, as well as long-term support and continuous learning and onsite reviews.

Myron Pincomb, board chairman of IBCCES, said ISEA has been an example of an organization doing active work on accessibility and inclusivity in its programming.

“Inland Seas Education Association becoming a Certified Autism Center is a significant milestone,” Pincomb said. “Their certification emphasizes their commitment to inclusivity and ensuring that everyone can fully experience and benefit from their programs. It’s a step forward in creating a more understanding and accommodating environment for all,”
