Mackinac Island prepares for changes to ferry service

The fallout continues after a decision was made over what Mackinac Island ferry service will look like for the rest of the season.

The island tourism bureau says they’re comfortable and confident about the city council’s decision.

The Mackinac Island City Council voted Wednesday to accept a proposal by Hoffman Marine to temporarily suspend Star Line service for the rest of the season.

That leaves Shepler’s as the lone ferry service to and from the island.

They’ll run boats from docks in both Saint Ignace and Mackinaw City and honor any pre-purchased Star Line tickets for the rest of this season.

“Reliable safe ferry service continues through the end of the year. Is it just one company, yes, but is that one company able to do it and do it in a really fine fashion, absolutely. They have a strong fleet, they have great employees and they know how to run a reliable service,” said Tim Hygh, Executive Director of Mackinac Island Tourism.

Hoffman Marine says they’re spending $4 million to upgrade Star Line boats and docks with the hope of running service in 20-25.
