Sen. Bob Menendez convicted of all charges, including accepting bribes paid in cash, gold and a car
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez was convicted on Tuesday of all the counts he faced at his corruption trial, including accepting bribes of gold and cash from three New Jersey businessmen and acting as a foreign agent for the Egyptian government. The jury’s verdict followed a nine-week trial in which prosecutors said the Democrat abused the power of his office to protect allies from criminal investigations and enrich associates, including his wife, through acts that included meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials and helping that country access millions of dollars in U.S. military aid. Menendez, 70, did not testify. He insisted publicly he was only doing his job as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He said the gold bars found in his New Jersey home by the FBI belonged to his wife, Nadine Menendez. She too was charged but her trial was postponed so she could recover from breast cancer surgery. She has pleaded not guilty. The verdict, delivered at a federal courthouse in Manhattan, comes four months before Election Day and potentially dooms Menendez’s chances of campaigning for reelection as an independent candidate.

New record set in Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac
CHICAGO (AP) — Sanford Burris skippered Maverick to a record-breaking finish in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, finishing the course of 289 nautical miles up Lake Michigan in 22 hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds. That was 1 hour, 6 minutes and 11 seconds faster than the old record set by Roy P. Disney aboard Pyewacket in 2002. The Maverick crew celebrated briefly as it crossed the finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island Lighthouse on Sunday. It then kept sailing as part of the “Super Mac” race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and the Bayview Mackinac races that continued into Lake Huron for a total of 496 nautical miles. Maverick also claimed the Royono Trophy for being the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition of the race, which is sponsored by Wintrust. Southerly winds and overnight storms created the perfect conditions for an incredible downwind race.

A vital resource for many people with disabilities announced they’re closing their doors at the Paris Center location in Mecosta County. Hope Network, a non-profit organization, provides healthcare and life services for many people with physical, social or mental barriers. Rehabilitation, job training and transportation are just some of the services they provide. We talked to Sheena Stanley, who relies on Hope Network for job placement and training, transportation to and from work, life skills coaching and social get-togethers, and her family. Sheena’s sister said she’s nervous for what’s to come after the closure and feels frustrated with the lack of communication and support during the transition. “They’ve taught them so many things, but to just drop everything just feels like, Holy cow. Now you don’t have you don’t have transportation. You don’t have the community. You’re going to be maybe working independently somewhere, if you can find a job. And so it feels very critical for their mental health and well-being to have somebody to support them,” said Sheena’s sister Sheri Conner, who is a social worker.

State Senate passes bill to establish e-bike speed limit on Mackinac Island
LANSING — Senate Bill 682, sponsored by state Senator John N. Damoose (R-Harbor Springs), implements a speed limit for bikes and electric bikes (e-bikes) on the state highway that surrounds Mackinac Island. Given that the highway prohibits motor vehicles, e-bikes that can reach up to 20-28 miles per hour have posed safety concerns. This bill prioritizes the safety of residents, addressing the possibility of future accidents perpetrated by e-bikes by enforcing a 15 mile-per-hour speed limit. ”I spoke with Mackinac Island officials and worked out agreeable terms prior to formally introducing the legislation earlier this year. This was an important update that had bipartisan support all the way to the governor’s desk,” said Sen. Damoose. “The newly signed law will maintain access for those with limited mobility but will also make sure visitors and residents on the island stay safe and are able to enjoy the unique Pure Michigan opportunities that Mackinac Island has to offer.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal judge presiding over the classified documents case of former President Donald Trump in Florida dismissed the prosecution on Monday, siding with defense lawyers who said the special counsel who filed the charges was illegally appointed. The decision by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon brings a stunning and abrupt conclusion to a criminal case that at the time it was filed was widely regarded as the most perilous of all the legal threats that the Republican former president confronted. Trump faced dozens of felony counts accusing him of illegally hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach,...
Anger and anxiety loom over the Republican convention after the assassination attempt against Trump
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Donald Trump’s campaign chiefs designed the convention opening this week to feature a softer and more optimistic message, focusing on themes that would help a divisive leader expand his appeal among moderate voters and people of color. Then came a shooting that rattled the foundation of American politics. Suddenly, the Democrats’ turmoil after the debate, the GOP’s potential governing agenda and even Trump’s criminal convictions became secondary to fears about political violence and the country’s stability. The presumptive Republican nominee and his allies will face the nation during their four-day convention in Milwaukee unquestionably united and ready to “fight,” as the bloodied Trump cried out Saturday while Secret Service agents at his Pennsylvania rally rushed him to safety. Anger and anxiety are coursing through the party, even as many top Republicans call for calm and a lowering of tensions.
