HOUGHTON COUNTY — A five-year study conducted by A Mission for Michael found anxiety levels have increased by 5% since 2019.

A Mission for Michael conducted a comprehensive study to analyze anxiety and stress levels over the past five years to determine if Americans are becoming more or less anxious.

Utilizing County Health Rankings data, they identified specific counties experiencing significant changes during this period.

The study revealed that the average percentage of frequent mental anxiety increased from 12% in 2019 to 17% in 2024 across all counties in America.

Looking at Michigan specifically, the study found that anxiety levels rose in line with the national average.

Residents of Alpena, Branch, Clare, Huron, Iosco, Jackson, Kalkaska, Macomb, Monroe, Montmorency, Presque Isle, Roscommon, St. Clair, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties have experienced the greatest rise in anxiety levels, seeing a 6% increase.

Oppositely, Houghton, Keweenaw and Oakland counties have experienced the lowest rise in anxiety levels at 3%.

Among approximately 3,000 counties in the U.S., only two experienced a decrease in anxiety levels over the past five years including Menominee, Wisconsin at -2%, and Mora, New Mexico at -1%.
