Week one of the college football season is only a few days away, and Saturday’s full slate of games gets kicked off with a non-conference rivalry between Georgia and Clemson in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Earlier today on The Morning Shift former NFL kicker, former Georgia kicker, and College Football Hall of Famer Kevin Butler told The Morning Shift why it won’t be defense that dictates how the game between the Tigers and the Dawgs go, but why offense will be the key for both teams in their season openers.

“I think the offenses for both of these teams will really dictate how this game goes because when you flip it around I think defense is the strong point of both of these teams. The defensive line for Clemson has been their strongest point over the years, and they’re certainly strong this year. Those linebackers, when you have those big guys up on the d-line your linebackers become a little bit freer, and they certainly have had great linebackers there.” Butler said.

Kevin continued by saying “As you look at Georgia, we’ve got some senior defensive lineman that have come back. I don’t know if [Warren] Brinson will be out there this week, but when you get in there you know those guys in the trenches as Kirby [Smart] and Dabo [Swinney] have always said they dictate what goes on in a game, and they’ll certainly dictate what goes on with the success of both of these teams throughout the year.”

Georgia and Clemson definitely have two dominant defenses that can shut down any offense, and while it’s changed a little bit in football, defenses still can be ahead of offenses, so whichever team is more ready to go offensively could end up being the difference maker.
