Chipper Jones explains why MLB seems to be getting away from doing ‘the little things’ to win

As the Atlanta Braves are now fewer than 20 games away from the regular season coming to an end, their push to advance to the MLB playoffs continues as they currently sit tied with the New York Mets for the third and final National League Wild Card spot.

And while they were able to pick up a 12-0 win over the Nationals on Tuesday, with four homeruns, they also saw the exit of starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez after just one inning pitched, adding to what has become the frustrations of the Braves’ season.

On Wednesday, Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden were joined by Atlanta Braves legend Chipper Jones, who is often called upon by the club to come in and work with players in the batting cage. Jones made recent comments about his frustration with watching the Braves and the ‘change in philosophy throughout baseball” that he believes is contributing to often-seen offensive struggles in MLB.

“It’s more about, let’s hit the ball out of the ballpark,” Jones said, noting that he certainly understands with today’s velocity of pitchers, putting the ball in play may be even more of a challenge than during his time as a player. He believes getting “the easy run” is becoming less common in the game today.

“Move a guy over," Jones said. "Do the little things that over a course of 162 games may get you 10 more runs a year, which may get you four or five more wins a year. Especially when you’re facing the elite of the elite in pitching, where your home run ball is going to take the night off and you’re going to have to manufacture runs."
