Law Roach has come a long way from his days as a vintage broker in Chicago. The self-proclaimed image architect built a career hyper-focused on making women look and feel beautiful, a task he doesn’t take lightly. The 46-year-old visionary is responsible for positioning some of the entertainment world’s most talented women as influential fashion figures.

Zendaya Coleman is one of his most notable clients. The two began working together when she was 14, during the actress’s Disney days. Roach would dress her for red-carpet events but quickly upped the ante during Fashion Week in 2014. Her color-block Muiniko coat created a viral moment that catapulted Coleman onto the fashion scene, forever changing her career.

In an interview with Issa Rae , the actress shared the strategy she and Roach used to achieve visibility. “Another thing that I feel like helped me create an avenue or lane that was outside of the Disney Channel was fashion. I would show up to sh*t I had no business being at just so I could get the look,” she explained. “I was called the seat filler. ‘She just shows up to everything.’ I was like, yeah, but I look good, though!”

The rest is history. Roach amassed a long list of A-list celebrities including Celine Dion, Kerry Washington, Megan Thee Stallion,  Ariana Grande, Lindsay Lohan and more. And while he claims he’s in his retirement era, the image architect has only scratched the surface of his impact.

In an exclusive interview during Revolt World 2024 , Law Roach shares his inspirations, how he manages to show up authentically, and the life waiting for him on the other side of styling.

HelloBeautiful : I love the way that you’re able to just show up unapologetically. In a world where black creatives are watered down They can’t show up in their fullness. Where do you get the courage to?

Law Roach : I don’t know if I had the courage when I first started to do it. I want to do what felt right and also thinking about people who were watching me and people who were coming behind me. Every time I’m able to say something that makes a small change, it makes it easier for people who look like me, who wanna do what I do, who want to be able to enter the rooms that I’ve been able to enter to get there a little bit easier.

And I also have a lot of fashion kids and people I mentor. And if I was quiet, that wouldn’t help their journey at all. That’s what I do it for. And if I have to take hits or, me becoming somebody’s least favorite person because of things I said, then, I’m okay with that.

HB : You are who a lot of stylists look up to. Who is your fashion Holy Grail in the stylist world? Who did you look up to?

LR : You know what, I didn’t really have anybody to look up to because coming from Chicago, this world was so foreign to me. I did when it came to music. Of course there was Misa Hilton and June Ambrose. And on the Hollywood side of things, there was Rachel Zoe, which her show actually gave me kind of a blueprint to what I wanted my career to look like. But I didn’t really get a chance to be mentored, intern or work for a stylist. I made a lot of mistakes, but I just moved to LA and, I had a dream and I just did everything in my power to realize that dream.

HB : Looking back on all you’ve accomplished, what’s one thing that you didn’t expect to accomplish and one thing you’re looking forward to accomplishing?

LR : I didn’t expect to become—I hate even saying it—I didn’t expect to become famous in a way. That was kinda a byproduct of the work.

I have a lot of things I want to accomplish. This book I wrote , “How to Build a Fashion Icon.” I have a school, a digital online school, that I just acquire that’s gonna help shrink the gap between people who want to be stylist and working in the industry. I’m trying to build a platform to give people everything I didn’t have. There may be some acting. I just wanna feel free. I feel nice. I’m in a place right now that I can try to do whatever I want to do and just take chances. And if it works out, it works out. And if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.
