LATROBE, PA (93.7 The Fan) – The first preseason game coming up on Friday, the Steelers released a first 2024 depth chart with one rookie on it and he was undrafted.
Beanie Bishop is the Steelers starting nickel back or slot defensive back for the matchup with Houston. The All-American from West Virginia wasn’t drafted, but said he knew immediately this would be a good opportunity. Bishop has been helped by the eight-game suspension to veteran Cameron Sutton in getting a ton of reps with the first team.
No real surprises with the defense with second-year defensive lineman Keeanu Benton at nose. Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts are the starting middle linebackers as they have practiced that way all camp. The back-ups are rookie Payton Wilson and returner Tyler Matakevich with Mark Robinson and Cole Holcomb , injured and let to appear at camp, as the third stringers.
Acquired for Diontae Johnson, Donte Jackson is a starting corner with Joey Porter, Junior . Second-year, seventh-round pick Cory Trice, Junior backs up Jackson. He will play his first ever preseason game on Friday with Darius Rush backing up Porter. DeShon Elliott starts next to Minkah Fitzpatrick with Damontae Kazee as the third safety.
A make-or-break year for Isaiahh Loudermilk , the defensive tackle is listed as third string with DeMarvin Leal, Dean Lowry and Montravius Adams as backups.
Offense
Dan Moore, Junior remains the starting left tackle with Broderick Jones on the right side and Nate Herbig at center. Rookie Troy Fautanu is listed as the back-up left tackle and Dylan Cook at right. Spencer Anderson , who has gotten most of the reps when a guard is out is the backup at left guard with rookie Mason McCormick the back-up to James Daniels , who is in the final year of his contract.
Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin are the starting receivers along with George Pickens. Dez Fitzpatrick, Quez Watkins and injured rookie Roman Wilson are the three backups. Najee Harris is the starting tailback followed by Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson , who has yet to practice. Connor Heyward listed as the starting fullback and third-string tight end. Darnell Washington backs up Pat Freiermuth with MyCole Pruitt and Rodney Williams sharing the fourth team.
Oh yeah, the starting quarterback is Russell Wilson , who obviously landed the pole position at least for the preseason opener even while missing most of the team drills with a tight calf. Justin Fields is the backup.
Two-deeps will change, but no draft picks get starts early.
