Michigan Bar Named Among Best ‘Hidden Bars’ in America
In the age of the internet, it's hard to imagine a business being hidden in any capacity. Most people search for where they are going these days, so it'd be impossible to conduct a productive business with no visibility. Still, going to your bar is the best, especially if the...
For 10 Glorious Years, Michigan Was the Largest State in the Nation
It's difficult to imagine now that Michigan was once the largest state in the union. Just looking at a map and seeing behemoth states like Texas, California and Alaska tells you instantly that Michigan certainly has nothing on those states when it comes to square miles. However for 10 glorious years Michigan could claim the title that no one else in the United States was larger.

While many were enjoying the 4th of July holiday weekend the Detroit Coast Guard was called into action to perform a brave rescue on Lake Erie. Five people were saved after their boat capsized, leaving them clinging to a cooler for safety. The incident happened about ten miles off the...
University of Farmington: Michigan’s Fake University With A Twisted Purpose
Graduating from high school and entering that next step in your life is one of the most exciting periods in a person's life. Some embark on the job market and others begin their college experience. Many kids are carrying their families on their backs as first-generation college students. Universities are seeing more and more first-generation students each year, many coming from immigrant families trying to build a better life for their children.
Southwest Michigan Locals Are Eager For A Whole Foods, How Likely Is It?
Word on the street is a now-closed health food store near Kalamazoo, Michigan could soon see new life as a Whole Foods grocery store, but what are the odds?. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Aldi gal at heart but I must admit the thought of having our own Whole Foods store here in the greater Kalamazoo area doesn't not sound appealing. I'd definitely pop in there from time to time to shop, wouldn't you?
You’ll Soon Be Able to Get Olga’s Kitchen’s Food in More Michigan Cities
It has not been the easiest decade for Olga's Kitchen. In 2015 the Michigan-based, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant chain filed for bankruptcy. Since then, a few Mitten-State locations have shuttered including in Grand Rapids at Woodland Mall. Later this month, however, three more Michigan cities will be able to snack on Olga's...
Have You Heard of Trash the Clown? One Michigan Town Adores Her
Many Michigan cities and towns have individuals they cherish or dislike for one reason or another. One Michigan town adores "Trash the Clown." I grew up in the small town of Holly on the east side of Michigan. Over the years I have been to many cities and towns across the state and have noticed individuals everyone knows of in town even if they don't know them personally. In Holly, it was a man everyone called F.B.I.
Why is Mosquito Season Worse in Michigan This Year?
Mosquito season in Michigan is longer and more intense than in past years. Here's why. If you feel like mosquitos are worse this year, it is not your imagination. Over time mosquito season from the Ohio Valley up to Michigan has increased quite a bit. Mosquitoes are thriving in our area for up to 21 days longer this year. We are seeing more mosquitos and for longer periods. SSP Innovations created maps showing areas of high humidity, wetlands, average rain, and heat at night. When those maps are layered together, they perfectly reflect the areas of bad mosquito areas. The same website created the map below to show how bad the mosquitos are in the U.S.
Kalamazoo County Jail IGNITE Program Gives New Purpose To Inmates
The criminal justice system was created to keep checks and balances on the citizens of the country and make sure they are abiding by the laws of the state and country but some feel like it has lost its way. The jaded views of the people come from a long list of judicial rulings that make the people question whether the justice system is here to enact justice or provide control. Some would argue that it's a tool used more for control than anything else.
Michigan Pizza Chain Named Nation’s Best Pepperoni Pizza
When I first moved to Michigan just under two years ago, the last thing I expected to be one of my favorite things about the state was pizza. All of my experiences with Detroit-style deep dish pizzas were awful -- but they weren't exactly made in Detroit or with the spirit of the Motor City either.
Ford, Michigan Cut $750 Million in Public Support from Marshall
While the site of the Ford EV battery factory in Marshall isn't going anywhere, some money from the manufacturer and the state of Michigan is. According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the two groups are cutting out $750 million of public money from related projects. The ebbs...
Battle Creek, MI Home For Sale Ripped Straight Out Of The ’70s
This swingin' pad in Battle Creek is totally groovy, man!. Also, why were saunas big in the '70s only? I think they were on to something there. Oh the parties I'd host if I had an extra $375,000!. Honestly, I'd buy this place for the retro fireplace downstairs alone; those...
Flight Out Of Detroit Lands Early Due To ‘Spoiled Food’ Served To Passengers
Airplane food has been in a downward tailspin (pun intended) for well over 20 years. You used to know if you had to fly, you'd at least have a tasty meal waiting for you once you took off. But, just like the quality of flights in general, most of the 'meals' served on planes are barely edible, flavor-wise.
Target Will No Longer Accept This as Payment in Michigan
Michigan shoppers, brace yourselves. In news that will only take a few by surprise, Target stores in the Mitten State and around the country will stop accepting a once standard and common form of payment. It seems like just yesterday, bills were accepted without a marker test for counterfeiting, credit cards were placed in boxes, under carbon paper, and scanned manually with a satisfying "click click."
National Retailer Coming to Jackson, Michigan’s Vacant Party City Location
The vacant building at 1510 N. West Avenue in Jackson, Michigan has housed at least two national retailers; both disappeared completely (though one was absorbed by another chain), and a third retail chain is now slated to open in the same location. The first failed big box store was Office Depot, which still technically exists at 1515 Boardman Road in Jackson as Office Max since the 'Depot' and the 'Max' merged in 2013, the same year as the store's closure. Party City moved in right after the Office Max closure and remained until the company declared bankruptcy and closed the Jackson location on April 26, 2023. Over a year later, it looks like a new tenant, with "Good Stuff Cheap," will be opening in late summer or early fall.
Survival Strategy: Michigan Olive Garden Restaurants Say No Discounts
In an era when restaurants are trying to win back customers with discounts, Olive Garden Restaurants in Michigan are taking a different tack: Survival. Restaurants such as McDonald's have recently announced $5 promotions in order to regain customers' loyalty during challenging economic times. But your local Olive Garden isn't jumping on the bandwagon.
Michigan Once Drank Gallons of ‘Detroiter Cola’ No One Remembers it Today
A soda fountain from decades gone by was a very different experience than picking up a favorite pop bottled and ready to go at any corner store. At the fountain, you'd sit at a counter to be served by a jerk who would mix carbonated water and syrup. That's the era of Detroiter Cola. A pop made clearly by the name, in Detroit for the people of Detroit.
