San Diego State was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by UConn on Thursday night, losing 82-52 in a game nobody expected the Aztecs to win. The defending champs opened up as 9.5 point favorites, and the point spread grew larger and larger throughout the week. The odds were stacked against the Aztecs from the start given the location of the game in Boston, which allowed a short bus ride for the Huskies as opposed to a cross-country flight for the Aztecs.
San Diego State found themselves within striking distance at halftime, trailing by just 9 points. The Aztecs really struggled shooting from beyond the arc, connecting on just 3 of 13 of their 3-point shots and shooting just 39.4% from the field overall in the first half. Their shooting percentage dropped 32% in the second half, as UConn flexed their muscles on defense and outscored SDSU 42-21 after halftime. SDSU really wasn't able to score efficiently from anywhere, finishing the game shooting 36.2% from the field, 22.7% from beyond the arc, and 50% from the free throw line on just 10 attempts.
In the second half, the Huskies showed why they are the defending national champions and a #1 seed this season, shooting just over 55% from the field, including knocking down nearly half of their 3-pointers. San Diego State held the lead for just 28 seconds during the game, allowing UConn to pull away in the second half. All in all, it was a great encore season for the Aztecs after last year's run to the national championship game.
