Padres beat Cubs 6-3
2024-05-07
The Padres defeated the Cubs 6-3 on Monday, with all of their damage coming in one inning. Yu Darvish tossed five scoreless innings, which was sorely needed with Joe Musgrove's IL stint. The game was tied at 0-0 entering the 6th, when Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a single. After Jake Cronenworth's infield single, the two pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Jurickson Profar's torrid start to the season continued, as he drove in both with a single up the middle. That was followed by singles from Xander Bogaerts and Donovan Solano, a walk by Ha-Seong Kim and then a bases-clearing 3-run double from Luis Campusano, as seven straight Padres reached base before the Cubs could record an out.
Yuki Matsui gave up a 2-run homer to Christoper Morel in the bottom of the 6th inning, and Enyel De Los Santos served up a solo homer to Yan Gomes in the 7th, bringing the Cubs to within 3. After Wandy Peralta issued a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the 8th, Mike Shildt brought in Jeremiah Estrada, who walked Dansby Swanson and gave up a single to Nick Madrigal to load the bases with no outs. After striking out Pete Crow-Armstrong, Shildt brought in closer Robert Suarez, who got out of the 8th inning unscathed and then pitched a perfect 9th inning, retiring all 5 batters he faced and earning his 11th save of the season with a 5-out save.
