    Basketball legend and La Mesa native Bill Walton passed away on Monday after losing his battle with cancer. Walton attended Helix High School, before going on to star at UCLA for legendary coach John Wooden, where he won 2 national championships and was a 3-time national player of the year. The Portland Trail Blazers selected Walton with the 1st overall pick in the 1974 Draft. After battling injuries throughout his first few seasons, Walton helped lead the Blazers to their first and only NBA title in 1977. Walton won another NBA title with the Celtics in 1986. After retiring from the NBA as a player, Walton became one of the most popular and beloved broadcasters in the industry, known for his love of music and gift of gab, where he would go off on tangents, but always brought passion and enthusiasm to every broadcast.
