The Padres survived a furious 9th inning rally from the Royals for an 11-8 win on Friday night. This game that featured two teams combining to score 19 runs on 31 hits actually began as a pitcher's duel, with the score tied at zero entering the 6th inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in the first run of the game on a double in the left-center gap and then Jurickson Profar drove in Tatis with a single. The Royals scored three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead and knocked out Dylan Cease. After a scoreless 7th inning from each team, the Padres scored 9 runs in the top of the 8th inning on 11 hits, including a stretch of 7 consecutive singles, to blow the game wide open. With the Padres holding an 11-3 lead in the bottom of the 9th, Stephen Kolek entered the game, and nearly gave it back to Kansas City. Kolek gave up a leadoff home run, followed by a groundout, two singles and then another groundout. At that point, the Padres led 11-4 with two out and two on, but Kolek surrendered three consecutive singles, letting in two more runs and loading the bases, which put the tying run in the on-deck circle. At that point, Mike Shildt elected to go to closer Robert Suarez in what had turned into a save situation. After allowing a two-run single to bring the score to 11-8, Nelson Velazquez came to the plate representing the tying run. KC's left fielder hit a high fly ball to the warning track that looked like it had a chance to clear the fence and tie the game, but Jose Azocar caught the ball to end the game and secure the win. Joe Musgrove will start on Saturday for the Padres.
