UPDATE: Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday morning that Tucupita Marcano has been banned for life from baseball after it was determined that he made hundreds of bets on baseball, including on Pittsburgh Pirates games. Marcano was a member of the Pirates when placing bets on the Pirates. Four other players have been suspended for one year for placing bets on baseball, but not on teams they played for. Those players are A's pitcher Michael Kelly and minor leaguers Jay Groome (Padres), Jose Rodriguez (Phillies) and Andrew Saalfrank (Diamondbacks).

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by ESPN , Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is being investigated for gambling on baseball games while a member of the Pirates organization, which would violate MLB's gambling policy. He's facing a lifetime ban pending the results of MLB's investigation. Four other players are being investigated in addition to Marcano, who is currently a member of the Padres. The Padres released the following statement to the Wall Street Journal:

“We are aware of an active investigation by Major League Baseball regarding a matter that occurred when the player in question was a member of another organization and not affiliated with the San Diego Padres. We will not have any further comment until the investigative process has been completed.”
