After the Padres made some big moves at the trade deadline earlier on Tuesday, they had a game to play against the division rival Dodgers. Things got off to a rocky start with Matt Waldron allowing 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning, but the Padres pulled it together, and didn't allow another run for the rest of the game. Showing the same fight they've shown all year, they clawed back into the game. Manny Machado blasted a solo homer in the 2nd inning, and Jurickson Profar and Jake Cronenworth each drove in runs in the 3rd to make it a 5-3 game. That score would hold until the bottom of the 9th inning, when Manny Machado hit his second bomb of the game to make it a 5-4 game, and then Jackson Merrill crushed a game-tying solo homer to send the game to extra innings. After holding Robert Suarez held the Dodgers scoreless in the top of the 10th, the Padres loaded the bases with 1 out for Jake Cronenworth against southpaw Alex Vesia. Mike Shildt opted to go to his bench and pinch-hit right hander Donovan Solano, who promptly ripped the ball down the third base line to win the game in dramatic fashion on a day full of drama. Clayton Kershaw will face Dylan Cease in Wednesday's series finale.
