The Padres completed a 2-game sweep of the Dodgers thanks to an 8-1 victory on Wednesday, and pulled to within 4.5 games of 1st place, which is the closest they've been to the top of the division since early May. With the victory, the Padres also won the season series against the Dodgers for the first time since 2010. This win was fairly free of drama, with the Padres scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Dodgers responded with a run in the 3rd, but the Padres countered with 3 more runs in the 4th inning to put the game out of reach.

Jurickson Profar, Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, Luis Campusano and Bryce Johnson all collected multiple hits, including Campusano's 7th long ball of the season. Dylan Cease followed up his no-hitter by allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings. But perhaps the bigger story was Clayton Kershaw's lack of effectiveness. The future Hall of Famer generated just 2 whiffs and no strikeouts while allowing 7 runs (3 earned) in less than 4 innings of work. San Diego's bullpen was once again lights out, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings, including debut performances from Jason Adam and Bryan Hoeing. The Padres will enjoy Thursday off before welcoming the Rockies to town.
