The Padres were heavily rumored to be pursing starting pitching at the trade deadline, but pivoted and invested heavily in their bullpen. The only starting pitcher they acquired was backend starter Martin Perez, who made his Padres debut on Saturday. Perez did not disappoint, allowing just one run in six innings while striking out seven. The quality start helped keep the Padres in the game against Rockies starter Tanner Gordon, who carried a perfect game into the 5th inning. The Padres finally got on the board and tied the game at 1-1 thanks to David Peralta's RBI-groundout in the 5th inning. Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill each drove in a run in the 7th inning, which proved to be *just* enough run support. Jacob Stallings hit a solo pinch-hit home run in the 8th inning off of Tanner Scott, who was also making his Padres debut. But Scott struck out two and held on to the lead, and Robert Suarez pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn his 24th save of the season.
