Joe Musgrove returned to the mound to make his first start since May 26th, and he did not disappoint. Musgrove pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, while allowing just 2 hits and a walk with one strikeout. He threw 43 of 63 pitches for strikes. This game was a pitcher's duel knotted up at 0-0 in the 7th inning, when Xander Bogaerts' opposite field single brought home Jurickson Profar for the game's first run. Kyle Higashioka added a crucial insurance run in the 8th inning on a deep sac-fly that brought home Bryce Johnson. The Pirates didn't go down quietly in the 9th inning. Oneil Cruz reached first base with a one out single, bringing the tying run to the plate. Cruz then advanced to second base on fielder's indifference with two outs. Andrew McCutchen would drive in Cruz to make it a 2-1 game, and the tying run was on base. But Jackson Merrill would save the day AGAIN, this time with his defensive prowess, as he made a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of Bryan Reynolds to end the game, on the same day he was named the National League's Player of the Week. Michael King will start on Tuesday for the Padres.
