Padres complete season sweep of Pirates

The Padres completed a season sweep of the Pirates with a convincing 8-2 win on Wednesday afternoon. Martin Perez continued to prove his worth as a trade deadline acquisition, striking out 8 while allowing just 1 earned run in 5.1 innings of work. The Padres staked Perez to an early lead, thanks to a 1st inning 3-run blast off the bat of Jake Cronenworth. Jackson Merrill's incredible rookie season continued, when he ripped a 2-run triple down the right field line in the 3rd inning. David Peralta followed up with a 2-run homer on his birthday to make it an 8-0 lead. The cushion allowed Mike Shildt to rest his high leverage relievers. Joey Bart hit a solo homer off Perez in the 6th, and the PIrates loaded the bases and scored a run off of Adrian Morejon in the 9th, but their comeback bid fell short. The Padres will enjoy a much needed day off before heading to Coors Field for a weekend series with the Rockies.
