The Padres defeated the Twins 5-3 on Monday night thanks to some excellent pitching and timely hitting from Jackson Merrill. Michael King struggled through the first two innings, allowing a run in each inning while working in and out of jams. He needed 45 pitches to make it through the first two frames. The Padres immediately answered the Twins' in the bottom of the 1st, with 2 runs of their own on a fielder's choice from Jake Cronenworth and an RBI-single from Xander Bogaerts. The Twins tied it up in the 2nd on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded by Willi Castro, but that was all that King would allow, as he settled in and cruised through 4 more scoreless frames to earn a quality start. With the game tied at 2-2, Jackson Merrill hit a bases clearing 3-run double to put the Padres up 5-2. That would prove to be all the offense the Friars would need. Jason Adam struck out the side in order in the 7th, Tanner Scott pitched a perfect 8th, and then Robert Suarez entered in the 9th. After retiring 15 consecutive Twins, Suarez walked Edouard Julien, followed by an RBI-single from Christian Vazquez, but that would be as close as the Twins would get, with Suarez earning his 28th save of the season.
