Padres take rubber match to win series in L.A.

The Padres had a chance to make an early season statement against their NL West rival, and they took it. Manny Machado broke a scoreless tie in the 4th with a solo homer off James Paxton. The Dodgers immediately responded with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The Padres tied the game in the 6th on an RBI-double play groundout by Luis Campusano followed by a run scoring infield hit from Jackson Merrill. After Will Smith said the previous night that Jurickson Profar was "kind of irrelevant," Profar delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit, blasting a bases clearing double off the center field fence with the bases loaded in the 7th inning. San Diego's bullpen was outstanding, as Enyel De Los Santos, Yuki Matsui, Wandy Peralta and Robert Suarez combined for 4 scoreless innings, as the Padres won 6-3 to improve to 9-9 on the season. The Padres will travel to Milwaukee for a 3-game series against the Brewers before returning home on Friday to face the Blue Jays.
