The Padres had a long day on Monday, playing a split doubleheader with the Braves after winning the first two games of the series. Things got off on the wrong foot in Game 1 with Dylan Cease on the mound, as he gave up 5 earned runs on 9 hits and 3 walks in just 4 innings of work. The Padres trailed 5-0 entering the 5th inning, when they scored their first run on a groundout from Jackson Merrill. Merrill added another RBI in the 7th on a single to center field. The Padres mounted a huge rally in the 8th inning, with Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado each delivering 2-run doubles to put the Padres on top 6-5. San Diego's bullpen was fantastic, hurling 5 scoreless innings, including 2 of them from Logan Gillaspie, who was the extra player added for the doubleheader, as the Padres held on to win 6-5 thanks to two fantastic defensive plays from Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth in the bottom of the 9th.
A story to watch from the first game will be Xander Bogaerts' shoulder injury, as he had to leave the game after diving for a ball in the field. Mike Shildt provided the following update after the game:
"Xander Bogaerts will receive more imaging, but the initial imaging is negative (which is positive). He's got stability, strength and range of motion in his shoulder. The initial feedback is best case scenario."
The nightcap didn't go as well for the Padres, as Braves starter Chris Sale was fantastic. pitching 7 shutout innings and striking out 9 while walking none. The Friars were held to 7 hits and weren't able to score, but will gladly take 3 of 4 from the Braves in Atlanta. The Padres are off to Cincinnati for a 3-game series with the Reds before returning home to host the Yankees.
