Kids across Acadiana are heading back to the classroom and some parents are asking why their children cannot interact with others of the opposite sex.

In a Facebook group for parents in Lafayette Parish, several parents with kids at L.J. Alleman were asking why kids of the opposite sex were separated while at lunch and while out during recess.

I reached out to parents with kids at this Lafayette Parish school and they confirmed that their kids are not allowed to interact with others of the opposite sex during recess and lunch. As for the reason, well we don’t know, a call was placed to the administration of the school, but they have yet to return our call.

Parents in the social media group said that several schools in the area have been operating students by gender while at lunch and recess, yet they still want answers as to why this is a policy on some campuses.

Some of the parents in the discussion seem to be fine with boys and girls being separated for lunch and recess, others say that they want their kids to be able to interact with those of the opposite sex while at school.

A mom did post that she thinks it’s healthy for kids of the opposite sex to interact with each other while at school and that her daughter is very disappointed in this school policy at L.J. Alleman.

In a statement sent to me from LPSS, here’s what the Chief of School released in a reminder on Friday:

“Students should not be separated by gender during the school day. This includes but is not limited to: breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria, recess, basketball courts, and other school activities. All students must also have equal access to all school facilities and programs.”
