Parents of Students in Louisiana Schools Heartbroken After First Instructional Week

So, the kids are back in the classroom for the 2024-25 school year and some parents are heartbroken after learning what their kids are being taught to do in classrooms.

At the start of each school year, every school and every teacher reviews policies and procedures so that everyone can be reminded of what to do and what not to do.

Sadly, because of recent tragedies on some campuses around the country, teachers are having to educate students on what to do in the event of an emergency on campus.

Years ago, all that we had to practice in school were fire drills and tornado drills, unless you were in school in the 1960s during the Cuban Missile Crisis. If you were a student then, you took part in drills for a potential nuclear attack.

For those who are unaware, students in the ’60s practiced what to do if the country came under attack, and that often required teachers and students sitting in the hallway with their heads down and legs crossed.

Now, students have to prepare for a different form of attack and that is an attack on their school. Teachers are educating their students on what to do if they come under attack and that often requires showing them how and where to hide in the classroom.

Parents who have kids in the upper grade levels may already be aware of what is being practiced on campus but for parents with kids in the lower grades of elementary school this is worrisome and even disturbing,

The parents I see expressing concern are not blaming the school for this drill or the instruction given, but rather they are blaming the current society we’re in. We often hear and see bad news events in the media, but until it affects you or your family you don’t understand the severity of the situation.

Parents are guilty of asking their kid(s) each day after school what they did or learned on that particular day and some parents are finding out from their young children that they learned how to hide or protect themselves from “the bad people.”

It’s heartbreaking to see where we are now as a society, but we should be applauding the schools and the school districts for being proactive when it comes to protecting our kids.

So many advances have been made on school campuses to secure them, and one is to instruct students on how to protect themselves from potential harm.

Let’s all hope and pray for a safe 2024-25 school year across our country.

Here’s a video that you may want to share with your kids. There are some great pointers in this video on what to do if a campus comes under attack. Again, we’d rather not have to share this with you, but there is no ignoring what has happened on some school campuses in the United States.
