If you grew up in Acadiana in the ’70s or ’80s you may recall hearing things on TV in French, including the rosary and weather forecasts.

Jim Olivier was a fixture at KLFY TV 10 for years. He was known by many in the Acadiana area for speaking Cajun French on television, including important weather forecasts.

Mitch Rabalais recently shared a broadcast from KLFY TV from many years ago, when Rob Perillo was at the CBS affiliate, and it shows Rob updating the viewers on Hurricane Andrew. and Jim Olivier repeating the forecast in French.

Keep in mind, there were many in the Acadiana area then that learned only French, so for a broadcaster to use French during such an important time as a hurricane was approaching, was vital to some.

Everything about this video will bring some of you back to your childhood or teen years. This KLFY TV 10 set, and anchors at the desk, defined my childhood years. After all, how could you forget the image of the Cajundome in the background?

Check out this vintage broadcast and see if this brings you back to your younger days.

Let me add, that Rob Perillo said that when he took the job at KLFY he didn’t know that a portion of the morning show was broadcasted in French, however, he learned quickly that Jim Olivier had a very special talent when it came time to serve his community.
