As we approach the peak of the 2024 Hurricane Season, meteorologists are on high alert and monitoring any potential disturbances in the Gulf or Atlantic.

While there currently isn’t anything to worry about in the ocean or gulf (Aug. 22), that doesn’t mean we can ignore the conditions that are favorable for development.

Water temperatures in the gulf are in the upper 80s and as you get closer to the coast, temperatures have reached the 90-degree mark. This can allow for spontaneous development, and that is why some will be watching a “Tropical Moisture Pool” in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to Zack Fradella, an area of disturbed weather could show up in the Gulf by the end of August, and while that doesn’t guarantee a storm will develop, it could bring some much-needed tropical moisture to the Gulf Coast.

If you look at your yard, you can see that there are patches of dead grass, and that’s a result of a lack of rainfall thus far this month, but things could change.

Again, we stress that there is no reason to get anxious about a storm in the gulf, but with conditions as is, it is always worth watching the gulf during this time of the year. And remember, to always have a plan for this hurricane season.

If there are any developments or news that you need to be aware of this season, we will share information here and on this station’s mobile app. Download the station’s app in your app store and be sure to turn on notifications.

For those counting, hurricane season officially ends on November 30th.
