Alamogordo City Commissioner Warren Robinson attended a recent training to become a more effective elected leader and to learn advocacy skills to champion state investment into Alamogordo's infrastructure, public safety and community needs.

On July 18th and 19th, 2024, Alamogordo City Commissioner Warren Robinson attended New Mexico Municipal League Level 2 training in Albuquerque with 59 other elected officials from around the state of New Mexico. Each training topic is valuable because experienced officials with years of service provide real world examples of how to be effective and efficient in municipal service. The league offers training year-round and is invaluable to new and inexperienced members.

The New Mexico Municipal League provides on-going training to elected officials in New Mexico. The league’s mission is to support, train and advocate for municipal governments. The league has a variety of trainings under an institute structure that provides leaders with knowledge and tools for effective leadership. MOLI or Municipal League Training Institute provides a two-part series (Level 1 and Level 2) covering topics such as forms of municipal governance, municipal revenue and taxes, parliamentary procedure, social media use and communication, risk management and more.

Commissioner Robinson explained to AlamogordoTownNews.org that he was excited to meet other officials from rural New Mexico who had the task of providing municipal services with limited budgets. The brainstorming and problems solving sessions were helpful in strategizing new solutions.

Robinson continued, "a high mark of the Municipal Officers League Training was the theme of this session: Roles and Responsibilities of the Governing Body. The opening session started with a reflective look at our responsibility in serving the public needs in our community. We were changed to answer the question about our individual work. Was our work ethical, legal and moral?

MOLI I Training was a gathering for new officials to get to know each other and the state apparatus of what we were tasked to do. MOLI II Training focused on the quality and seriousness of what our tasks encompass. We are human and complex beings who get angry, make mistakes and often take conflict personally. MOLI training has gathered much knowledge and experience. We were afforded the opportunity to learn how to conduct ourselves with professionalism and dignity. The next series of training focused on very specific techniques of problem solving and interagency cooperation."

The topics for the most recent session that Commissioner Robinson just attended included:

    • Roles and Responsibilities of the Governing Body
    • Introduction to Public Procurement
    • Zoning for Success: Strategies for Municipal Leaders
    • Effective Public Safety Partnership: Working with Your Police Department
    • Crisis Management 101Municipal Leadership Case Studies
    • Building a Culture of Safety: Occupational Safety Basics 101
    • Advocating for Your City: Lobbying 101

Robinson will continue the training process when the league offers further training sessions later in the year. But, more importantly, Warren Robinson is investing his time and resources to better serve his district and the city-wide diversity of Alamogordo.
