Hurricane Hilary has cut a mark across Southern California with trees falling and streets collapsing in Santa Clarita, flooding in La Quinta, and dangerous travel conditions from Ventura County to Riverside County.

The tropical storm intensified Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles County and Ventura County after causing rain and flooding from the Mexican border through San Diego and into the greater Palm Springs area.

La Quinta had flooding and strong gusts of wind that entrepreneur Melody Whitehead, a photo coach and owner of Safeguard Your Memories®, caught on video outside her home office and posted on Facebook. “We’re about 30 minutes from Palm Springs and the wind was going like crazy, blowing every which way.”

She also caught views of lightning in a separate storm on Friday over the Chocolate Mountains toward Joshua Tree National Park, which is closed due to Hurricane Hilary until further notice.

Traffic warnings were posted in Santa Clarita where streets were partially washed out on Sand Canyon Road near Soledad Canyon Road and trees were falling due to flooding.

The National Weather Service for the Los Angeles region said Sunday night by 8:45 that travel in parts of LA County and Ventura County was hazardous. The Twitter account noted that rain across the Santa Monica Mountains and coastal Ventura County was producing significant flooding with cars stuck in the Spanish Hills area Sunday evening and the Ventura Fire Department performing rescue duties.

Flash flood warnings were posted for the area, including Ojai which was the center of the 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday afternoon with a depth of 14.6 km.

The seismology lab at CalTech says to expect aftershocks for the next few days.

Las Vegas declared a state of emergency and Lake Mead that’s 30 miles east of the city is closed to all recreational use, according to an alert on its official website.

A year earlier, August 2022, two people were killed as heavy rains poured into two casinos in what Clark County officials say in a news report was the wettest monsoon season in a decade.
