POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - On July 12, 2024, local law enforcement took Angelica Mar of Pompano into custody following a disturbing discovery at a residence in Pompano. According to authorities, a decomposing puppy was found in an outdoor cage, prompting an investigation into animal cruelty.

Mar, a 34-year-old resident of Pompano, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details regarding the incident's circumstances.

    The Disturbing Discovery
The Broward Sheriff's Office responded to Mar's home in the 3700 block of Northeast 15th Avenue on Thursday following an anonymous tip about a dead dog in a cage with a foul smell. Deputy Therdens Conserve, who was first on the scene, reported that the decomposition odor was noticeable from the street.

Upon entering the next-door neighbor's backyard, Conserve discovered a small black dog, Luna, a 6-month-old Chihuahua, locked inside a double-latched cage, surrounded by numerous flies.

    The Heartbreaking Circumstances
Two bowls of water were found a mere 5 feet away from the cage, but tragically out of reach for the locked-in puppy. Authorities believe Luna was left outside with no food or water for multiple days. The likely cause of death was heat exhaustion.

    Legal Consequences
Mar was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, causing death, and unlawful confinement of an animal without food or water. Her statement to authorities was redacted from the arrest report. Online records show Mar was set to leave the BSO Main Jail on a $10,000 bond Friday.

The Broward Sheriff's Office continues to encourage community members to report any signs of animal abuse or neglect.
