NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kelvin Munoz, also known as “Kel,” 29, of New Haven, was sentenced today to 52 months in federal prison for his involvement in a drug trafficking ring in the Fair Haven neighborhood. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford, followed by three years of supervised release.

The FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force initiated an investigation into the drug trafficking organization in June 2022. The probe utilized court-authorized wiretaps, physical surveillance, and several controlled purchases of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine from Munoz and others. The investigation also uncovered individuals distributing prescription narcotic pills.

On September 20, 2022, investigators conducted a controlled purchase of a Polymer 80 .40 caliber handgun, ammunition, and a quantity of fentanyl from Munoz and a co-defendant. On March 9, 2023, shortly after Munoz met with his state probation officer, investigators made another controlled purchase of approximately 48 grams of fentanyl from him.

Munoz has been detained since his arrest on a state charge on August 23, 2023. He pleaded guilty in federal court on April 5, 2024, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, controlled substances.

The investigation led to federal charges against 12 individuals and was conducted by the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, which includes members from the FBI, Connecticut State Police, Connecticut Department of Correction, and the New Haven, Milford, East Haven, West Haven, and Wallingford Police Departments.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan J. Keefe is prosecuting the case through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program. The OCDETF Program focuses on identifying, disrupting, and dismantling drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations.
