Kansas City, MO — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for a large portion of east-central and northeast Kansas, as well as central, north-central, northeast, northwest, and west-central Missouri. The watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Thursday evening.

The forecast predicts dangerously high heat index values, starting with up to 105 degrees on Monday. The heat is expected to intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday, with heat index values potentially reaching up to 114 degrees. By Thursday, the heat index values may again rise to around 105 degrees.

These extreme heat and humidity conditions can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. The NWS advises residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others. This includes drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as young children and the elderly. It's crucial to never leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can quickly reach lethal temperatures.

Residents in the affected areas, including major cities such as Kansas City, St. Joseph, Independence, and Overland Park, are urged to stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and updates from the NWS.
