Young Twin Dies in Weekend Crash

ORANGE, Va. – Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed a young Chesapeake woman on Sunday.

According to an emailed media release from VSP Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred on July 21.

At 8:38 a.m., a 2013 Mazda CX9 was traveling north on Route 20 (Constitution Hwy), when it failed to maneuver a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and collided with a tree just north of Route 639 (Jacksontown Rd).

The driver, Abigail L. Matthies, 22, of Chesapeake, was not injured in the crash. She was wearing a seatbelt.

A passenger, Isabelle S. Matthies, 22, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to UVA Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. She was wearing a seatbelt.

Abigail Matthies was charged with reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation.
