Aggressive Bees Euthanized in Alabama to Protect Honeybee Population

St. Clair County, AL - June 19, 2024—The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) recently discovered and euthanized Africanized honeybee AHBs (AHB) swarms in Jackson and St. Clair Counties.

The invasive bees, known for their aggressive behavior, were identified in their feral state, separate from any managed hives. Local beekeepers collected the swarms before they could establish themselves.

“Our top priority is protecting both residents and our existing honeybee population,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Rick Pate. “The ADAI is actively monitoring the situation and taking steps to prevent the spread of these bees.”

While Africanized and European honeybees look similar, AHBs are more defensive and can be a threat if provoked. They are easily disturbed and may swarm in larger numbers than their European counterparts.

The ADAI advises residents to be aware of the following differences between AHB and European honeybees:

    • Defense: AHBs are more aggressive and will defend their hives more readily.
    • Swarming: AHB may swarm as often as every six weeks, while European honeybees typically swarm only once a year.
    • Nesting: AHB will nest in various locations, including small cavities or even open spaces, while European honeybees prefer larger, established cavities.

If you suspect you’ve encountered an Africanized honeybee swarm, the ADAI urges you to avoid disturbing them and contact them immediately at 334-240-7228.
