Fall camp is rolling on for the Ohio State Buckeyes and they’re preparing to take on the 2024 season where they have lofty goals to reach for. It is no secret that quarterback Will Howard is going to be a key part of this Ohio State team. The latest news around the graduate transfer is good news for the Buckeyes and bad news for the opposition.

According to offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Howard is the fastest quarterback in Columbus and was clocked in at running 22 MPH. When Howard arrived in Columbus he was nearly 250 pounds, now he is in better shape and down at least 15 pounds.

Last season, the quarterback run was not really a part of the game plan with Kyle McCord as the guy. Now, the Buckeyes can put the designed run back in the game plan for the offense and it allows things to open up a bit. Howard being able to use his legs is a big plus for Kelly’s offense. While Howard will run the ball, it won’t be a primary focus still.

"But we're also not going to run them 25 snaps a game. They're not Tim Tebow now, so we're not direct snapping it to them and running quarterback power,” Kelly explained on Tuesday. “It's just another facet of what we can do, and you have to account for the quarterback in the run game."

Last season at Kansas State, Howard went over 300 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. In comparison, McCord finished the season with negative yardage on the ground.

With a two-headed monster at running back between Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson, adding in a quarterback who can run is going to make it that much tougher for the opposing defense. It sounds like the Buckeyes have a good thing on their hands with early impressions on Howard, who is expected to be named the starter soon.
