New Orleans Saints football is officially back in 2024! They open preseason action against the Arizona Cardinals. Starters played some reps in the first half, but the depth is what means the most in today's matchup.
Position battles are ramping up, and guys have to prove that they deserve a spot on the roster for the rest of the exhibition matchups and Week 1.
First half observations from Saints vs. Cardinals
Trevor Penning impresses in first preseason game of 2024
We did not see a ton from the starting lineup from the Saints offense, but the offensive line looked good to begin the game. Trevor Penning had great reps in the first quarter, even on third down when New Orleans did not convert.
The Saints starting unit on offense got two drives, rather than just one. They did not score on either drive, and the running game was fairly nonexistent. It's the preseason, so don't fret too much. I do not believe that Klint Kubiak and co. were using too many valuable bullets in this matchup.
Although, they did face the Cardinals' second-string defense for the most part. They fared well against New Orleans' starters.
Cameron Jordan taking inside snaps on defensive line
Jordan took some interior snaps in the first half of the game. He helped the Saints defensive line get to the QB on multiple occasions.
His greatest value may come from that spot in 2024, with Carl Granderson and Chase Young on the outside. Bryan Bresee had a couple of impact plays as well. That's notable for New Orleans' defense.
Saints defense dominates Cardinals backups
New Orleans held its own on defense in the first half. The defensive line got consistent pressure, and the secondary had the outside options on lockdown. Both were good looks for the unit.
We will see how they perform in Week 2 of the exhibition matchup, but they got off to a hot start to begin their preseason action.
Jamaal Williams shows energy that everyone loves
The backup RB for the Saints picked up a couple of first downs during the first half. Afterwards, he showed some major emotion and excitement. You love to see that from a veteran player in an exhibition game.
Expect to see more of that with his reps during the regular season as well.
