In the end, it was a short-lived position battle.

After over two weeks at training camp, the Carolina Panthers released rookie kicker Harrison Mevis on Sunday .

Mevis was brought in to help push veteran kicker Eddy Pineiro throughout practice. In the end, Pineiro proved reliable enough for the Panthers, allowing the team to make a definitive decision regarding the kicking position for the time being.

Mevis signed with the Panthers after going undrafted in April. He kicked a 41-yard field goal and kicked off twice in their preseason opener against the Patriots.

Pineiro is in his third season with the team. He made 90 percent of his field goals over the last two seasons.

The Panthers brought in rookie tackle Tyler Smith (Western Carolina) to replace Mevis via free agency.

Smith, a native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, attended school in Western Carolina. He was previously with the Los Angeles Chargers.
