Eagles rookie gets brutally roasted by team's starter after bad play in practice

Philadelphia Eagles veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson isn't afraid to tell it how he sees it.

And he did just that on Day 11 of training camp after watching rookie wide receiver Ainias Smith make another bad play, according to Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski who recapped what happened:

"On one rep, rookie fifth-round wide receiver Ainias Smith faced off against undrafted rookie safety Andre' Sam. Smith got no separation at all, but Tanner McKee still fit a pass into Smith in a spot where he could have made the catch anyway, but he couldn't bring it in. The defensive players then mobbed Sam, with Chauncey Gardner-Johnson yelling three times at the top of his lungs about Smith, "He ain't done s*** all camp!" Oof. Brutal."

This isn't a good look for Smith after he put on a poor performance in the Eagles' Week 1 preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

It also isn't the best look for CJGJ to say that about his own teammate, but maybe his words will light a fire in the Eagles' fifth-round pick.

Ainias Smith Has Struggled All Offseason

Smith has struggled a lot this offseason, according to many reports.

But he is optimistic that he can and will do better moving forward.

“Honestly, I ain’t gonna lie,” Smith told Sports Illustrated right after Friday's win. “I’m not really excited about performance. I feel I can do a lot better. I just want to keep trying to stack days and keep working. That’s all I can do.”

Before entering the league, Smith was a dual-threat weapon at Texas A&M where he hauled in 53 catches for 795 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 21 yards on five carries, and averaged 14.3 yards per punt return on 20 attempts.

A stress fracture that he suffered in his left shin at the NFL Combine kept him from quickly ramping things up with the Eagles this spring, which could be a reason for his setback.

The good news is, Smith has a handful of practices left and two more preseason games to redeem himself, and ultimately make Chauncey eat his words.

"My first time in the league is definitely different than college," he said. "I haven’t been able to go in with the same mindset I had in college. I have to be able to bounce back and not let a bad day turn into another.”
