Talanoa Hufanga hasn't played football since tearing his ACL in November last year.

This week, the San Francisco 49ers will get an update that should provide an indication as to whether his hopes of starting at safety in the season opener next month are realistic.

Hufanga, an All-Pro for the 49ers in 2022, suffered a season-ending injury in a Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last campaign.

The former fifth-round pick has previously stated his target was to be ready for Week 1 and that he was hopeful of returning to practice at some point in training camp.

"The goal is to be ready by Week 1,” Hufanga said. "The goal is to be in training camp, not at the very beginning, but to ramp up correctly so it’s not just to throw me out to the wolves and good luck. But try to be smart with that. We’ve had plenty of conversations with the training staff and putting me in the best possible situation to succeed."

Hufanga is still waiting on that return to practice, but the 49ers' should get more information on his status in three days' time.

"He's going to see his doctor on Thursday, get his check up, we'll see where he is after that," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday.

"It's [his recovery] going very well. Hopefully we'll get some good news on that and we can get him back in practice sooner rather than later."

Good news on the injury front hasn't been commonplace for the 49ers of late. The Niners canceled joint practices with the New Orleans Saints this week because of an injury list that includes 23 players. San Francisco had a padless practice for its first-stringers only on Monday.

In his press conference after that practice, Shanahan revealed that cornerback Isaac Yiadom, who could play significant snaps on nickel downs this year, will be out a couple weeks after rolling his ankle in a walkthrough ahead of the preseason opener with the Tennessee Titans .

Defensive tackle Kalia Davis suffered a knee injury that will require surgery in that game. On the offensive side of the ball, veteran interior lineman Jon Feliciano is dealing with knee irritation. Shanahan also revealed that swing tackle Jaylon Moore missed the preseason opener because of illness.
