Looking back at past recruiting classes can be a fun exercise. Not only can you evaluate how certain players were ranked, but you can also gain appreciation for a class in its entirety. When evaluating the 2022 high school quarterback class, appreciation might not be the first word that comes to mind.

A class of extremely toolsy signal callers, there hasn’t been much evidence of high development or a ton of success in general. As of today, it is a group that has extremely underperformed, hoping for big 2024 seasons.

Here are the top ten quarterbacks from that class according to the 247Sports composite ranking, as well as how successful each player has been so far. It has been an underwhelming group as a whole. The good news, there’s still time and exciting depth to help.

    Cade Klubnik (Clemson)

After some mop up duty in 2022 behind former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, a lot was expected of Klubnik taking over as starter last season. That season ended up being an underwhelming one, throwing for 2,844 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Klubnik averaged less than ten yards per completion, lacking the ability to create big plays.

    Conner Weigman (Texas A&M)

When Weigman has been available, he’s been very impressive. The problem is that durability has held him back the last two seasons, limiting him to nine games played. In those games, he has thrown for 1,875 yards and 16 touchdowns, compared to only two interceptions. Aggie fans are expected a massive ascension for Weigman in 2024.

    Ty Simpson ( Alabama )

Simpson was a part of the quarterback battle last offseason, but did not come out on top. He will again serve as a backup in 2024 before Jalen Milroe. Having only thrown for 214 yards in his career, Simpson must now fend off talented younger quarterbacks like Dylan Lonergan to hopefully earn a starting role in the future.

    Drew Allar (Penn State)

Depending on what service you frequent, some had Allar as the top quarterback in the 2022 class. From a physical standout, he has every tool you look for. He gave Nittany Lion fans a lot of flashes as a true freshman, and some more during his first year as a starter in 2023. During that first season as a starter, Allar threw for 25 touchdowns and just two interceptions. For anyone who watched, he was very underwhelming in the biggest moments. With former Kansas offensive coordinator Amy Kotelnicki coming over this offseason, optimism is high.

Walker Howard ( LSU - Ole Miss )

Howard spent one season with LSU, and is now heading into year two with the Ole Miss program. In two years, he has thrown for 63 yards on eight passes thrown. Howard will back up Jaxson Dart in 2024.

Devin Brown ( Ohio State )

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride; it feels like Brown’s name has been in the starting conversation frequently during his time with the Buckeyes. He was in a heated battle last offseason with Kyle McCord, and lost. Now he’s trying to upset Kansas State transfer Will Howard this offseason. At some point, you have to wonder if Brown is ever going to get his chance.

    Gunner Stockton ( Georgia )

For the third straight season, Stockton is set to be a backup. He is projected to be the main backup for potential first round pick Carson Beck, which could put him in contention to start in 2025. Stockton threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns last season.

    Sam Horn (Missouri)

Now a redshirt sophomore, Horn has thrown for just 54 yards and a touchdown so far in his career. Also a baseball player for the Tigers, he is known as a toolsy signal caller with a lot of raw gifts. Horn just has yet to get an opportunity behind starting quarterback Brady Cook.

Nick Evers (Oklahoma - Wisconsin - UConn)

Trivia question: Where does Evers currently play football? If you said Oklahoma, you would be incorrect. If you guessed Wisconsin, you would also be mistaken. Entering his third season, Evers is now a part of the UConn program. He is projected to be the starter this season, having yet to complete a pass in his career.

    Brady Allen (Purdue - Louisville)

In two seasons, Allen has completed 2-4 for 15 yards. After starting his career with the Boilermakers, Allen followed Jeff Brohm to Louisville. He’s projected to be a backup to Tyler Shough this season.

    Other names of note

There are several notable members of the class that could save it with big 2024 seasons. Here are some of the top signal callers in the group, many of which were very underrated.

    12. Maalik Murphy (Texas - Duke)

    30. Alex Orji (Michigan)

    33. Rocco Becht (Iowa State)

    38. Noah Fifita (Arizona)

    53. Jayden Maiava (UNLV - USC)

    73. Byrum Brown (USF)
