Suspicion has already been confirmed when it comes to Ohio State’s big recruiting miss with a five-star player

The college football landscape is crazier than it has ever been. In the recruiting part of things, premier programs are losing top-end talent more than they ever have to schools that you would not guess.

That was the case recently for an Ohio State target that chose Georgia Tech over the Buckeyes, Tennessee, and Florida State . It would have made it a much easier pill to swallow for all involved if five-star Josh Petty chose one of his other finalists, instead it was the Yellow Jackets.

Petty gets to stay in Georgia and be close to home, still, that does not seem like enough for Georgia Tech to pull a five-star talent over some of the other schools. According to On3, Petty has a three-year deal that will pay him $800,000 each year that he is with Georgia Tech.

It would have been very tough to see Ohio State or Tennessee match that number since both schools are in the mix for five-star offensive tackle David Sanders Jr. It is said that Sanders could bring in a seven-figure deal, which would make it a tough ask to guarantee roughly $2.4 million to Petty.

While the NIL isn’t the only reason that Perty chose Georgia Tech over his other finalists, you can bet on it being a major factor whether that is made known or not. Petty’s father shared some of the other things that stood out with On3:

“The time that we spent there meeting the professors and talking about what he wanted to study was phenomenal,” the elder Petty said in a phone call Tuesday. “The coaching staff, they’re incredible. There’s a lot of energy. And then the other piece that is very exciting, is that my son and other athletes have an opportunity to put together a financial foundation that will allow them to transition in life and be able to address some of the issues of affordability.”

Offensive line recruiting has not gone how the Buckeyes would wish for lately. Petty was a miss and according to crystal ball predictions, Ohio State is going to miss out on Sanders . It just may be a bit more clear now why the Buckeyes were not the landing spot for Petty.
