Miami Dolphins allege bizarre free agent miscalculation regarding recent roster move

The Miami Dolphins raised a few antennae around the league on Tuesday when they announced they had released defensive tackle Teair Tart .

The reason, according to head coach Mike McDaniel, is perhaps even more curious.

McDaniel met with the media on Wednesday, and he claimed that Tart was released as he was not a good fit for the team's defensive scheme.

"Just one of those situations where you can see that from a scheme standpoint it’s not totally a fit," McDaniel said. "And when you know that you have a veteran player that has ambitions that maybe as a coaching staff we can see it might not fit, we try to be proactive with that so he has the opportunity to – wish him well at his next place, but he has an opportunity at his next place to do what we know he wants to do.”

Not totally a fit from a scheme standpoint is certainly an interesting thing to say given the circumstances of when the team brought Tart in.  He was signed in April, months after the Dolphins hired current defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver to replace Vic Fangio.  Tart certainly doesn't lack tape, having appeared in 45 games over four seasons with the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans.

As such, the Dolphins certainly knew (or should have known) the player they were getting as far as what he's good at and how he can handle their scheme-specific requirements.  Of course, it's possible there were other reasons in play, but McDaniel to his credit declined to name them.

After all, scheme fit is something that other teams can probably live with, so it really does right by the player, as does the timing of the move, given there's time left for him to sign with another team.

In fact, the Los Angeles Chargers have already moved to bring in Tart for a visit .  As such, it's possible the now-former Dolphin finds a new football home very soon.
