The Green Bay Packers have three kickers on the 90-man roster . Anders Carlson, a sixth-round pick from last year, veteran Greg Joseph, and undrafted rookie Alex Hale. The Packers are the only team in the entire NFL with three kickers, and that tells you everything you need to know about their confidence level in those guys.
During Family Night, general manager Brian Gutekunst said their kickers are competing against themselves, but also against the rest of the league. And that's because eight teams in the NFL have multiple kickers on their rosters — it was nine, but the Los Angeles Rams released Tanner Brown on Tuesday.
Presuming that no team will keep more than one in the regular season's 53-man roster , intriguing options might surge before week 1, when the Packers travel to Brazil to face the Philadelphia Eagles.
Cade York, Cleveland Browns
For those who watched the Packers-Browns preseason game, it was easy to see that Cade York is a talented player. He converted a 55-yard field goal and an extra point.
York, though, has had a weird trajectory. He was a fourth-round pick in 2022, which shows how talented he is. But he failed to establish himself and lost the job to Dustin Hopkins last training camp. After spending some time with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants last year, he signed back with Cleveland in March.
"Everyone in this room knows how talented we think Cade is," Browns general manager Andrew Berry said. "Obviously, last year he went through a tough stretch with us in camp. But you see this a lot with the history of kickers. A lot like rookie players there is a little bit of up and down before they find their stability. We've always believed in having a developmental kicker on the roster, and Cade we believe is as good as they come in that regard. We're looking forward to working with him again."
York's profile is similar to Anders Carlson's, but he has a higher ceiling and one year of extra experience in the NFL.
Matthew Wright, Pittsburgh Steelers
Wright is the definition of a journeyman. Since he entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2019, he's played for the Steelers (it's his fourth stint there!), Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, and New England Patriots. He also played in the XFL for the Tampa Bay Vipers. He had only one season as a full-time starter, though, playing 14 games for the Jaguars in 2021.
Despite the unusual path, Wright has solid numbers, converting 85.1% of his field goals and 94.6% of his extra points, which is better than both Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph in the NFL.
Brayden Narveson, Tennessee Titans
Narveson didn't make Dane Brugler's top 10 list on The Beast , which Alex Hale (who is on the Packers roster) did . However, the Packers met with him during the All-Star Circuit. He signed with the Titans in May and converted a 34-yard field goal against the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason opener. The Titans have a veteran in Nick Folk, and if they decide to go with Narverson, maybe Folk is also a solid option for Green Bay.
