Detroit Lions Mailbag: Will the Lions trade for a receiver before Week 1? Who could it be?

Welcome to another Detroit Lions Mailbag. We've got plenty of good questions to get to this week, let's jump into them.

At this point it is extremely confusing as to why the Lions have not yet made a move at this position. They had chances in free agency and the draft, but were overly confident that they had a good enough group to to get it done.

I wrote last week that it would be shocking if the Lions didn't make some kind of move to shore up the receiver room. I still feel that way, but time is running out on that. You don't want to let this go to the trade deadline.

Like I said in the last answer, I'd be shocked if they didn't make a move. In terms of who they sign or trade for, I have some options.

One option I feel like is worth trying out on the signing end is Juju Smith-Schuster. He's still just 28-years-old and there could be some stuff left in the tank there. He's currently a free agent. Brad Holmes was once pretty interested in him.

As for trade options, I wrote up this piece earlier this week that laid out four options they could go with.

Adjust, adjust and then adjust some more. One of the big reasons the Lions had third quarter issues is because they tended to stick to the game plan just a little too much coming out of the half and they need to approach it like it's a new game instead of continuing what worked or didn't work earlier.

Once the Lions did adjust last year, they started closing out games. Just keep doing that.

I think that honor still goes to Amon-Ra St. Brown. I expect Jameson Williams to have a career year, but I don't think he starts hitting his peak until next season. I projected the season stats for all Lions offensive players before camp and I just projected him to have 65 receptions for 782 yards and six touchdowns. That would be a great year for him.

Branch at safety could make him see the field less, but I wouldn't look at it like he's being demoted or anything like that. The reality is that the Lions are planning to have that secondary be a lot of moving pieces. So you'll see Melifonwu come out on three safety sets or flex in and out with someone. They're even working him in at nickel as well. We'll see him out there.

I wouldn't expect any issues with the guys that have been together. really the only concern is at receiver. Other than that, this team should be able to be a high powered offense just like they were last season. We're still waiting to hear on injuries, but Dan Campbell did say on Wednesday morning that everything was going to be fine.

I like safety Loren Strickland a lot and I think Dan Campbell likes him too. With Morice Norris getting waived earlier this week, that's going to open up a real spot for him. It's going to be interesting to see how many safeties the Lions carry. If it's five, than there's no way Strickland isn't on this team. If it's four he might get edged out by Brandon Joseph.

I think they're starting to feel pretty good about it. Marcus Davenport is coming a long nicely. Then there's Mitchell Agude, James Houson, Mathieu Betts, Levi Onwuzurkie, Josh Paschal, Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo. All of these guys bring something to the pass rush game and the Lions seem to be pleased by all of them.

If Davenport can stay healthy, I really believe he could be big in Detroit.
